Hello all, please what does "on call duty" mean?depositphotos_209144860-stock-photo-lady-sunglasses-sitting-car-talking.jpg

I just got an offer and inside the letter, it was written I could be on call on Saturdays.

Are you a doctor? I know doctors use to be "on call" as old as typewriter era when there wasn't a phone but a beeper.

Anyways, it means you can be called to work at anytime on most or few Saturdays. It depends on your job type, could be remotely or in-office and you have to leave everything or anything you are doing and start your work. That's it.

Yace

@Ruthk has explained it well. What I will just add is that if you do not plan to spend your life on emergency work, don't accept the job.

You can not go and spend your weekend in another city or even several kilometres away, once you sign you have to be leaving everything you are doing on those Saturdays when you're on call and work.

If you never planned to live that way, don't sign the agreement please.

Just imagine being with a babe on a date on Saturday and your boss calls...Oh my world

My bad. Just send a mail and politely say you are already engaged with other things like family stuff on Saturdays or find another excuse.
You can also ask if it could be done remotely, that would be better. Also ask if it's not going to be too often, the answer will depend on your final decision.
It means you are a professional, only professionals are summoned on calls.

Some Engineers, Bankers and IT expert can also be "on call".

Urguy

In addition to what Rocco wrote last, if you are not a professional or specialist in your field then the company might be trying to trick you in and you might end up being called almost all Saturdays. So it's better to wait for something that won't later drain you.
